Day 33- On-Route to Barcelona

It's always hard to leave a place where you've made good friends... Once we got on the road however, we were looking forward to getting to our next destination as fast as possible... Well, as fast as you can when trying to avoid the toll roads!! (Tolls of 20/30 Euros for a couple of hours driving is not worth it when you're travelling for 2 months- 0uchy!)

On this particular stretch of road, the reoccurring theme was the massive cut out of a bull's silhouette on the top of various hills!! It's obviously a well known icon in Spain and there's something quite eye catching about these signs... It's like a regular reminder of where you are- that's right, you know it, you're still in Spain!

In some areas along that stretch of road between the West Coast and the East Coast, you really did need those reminders!! Leaving the industrial cities of Portugalete and Bilbao behind, we drove through and beyond the gorgeous Rioja region. After this, you get to a point where the land becomes completely arid and is very desert- like...

It's a surreal feeling. As I was driving there were parts that reminded me of pictures I have seen of Utah in USA; other parts reminded me of a mini Grand Canyon and mid- west USA with wheat silohs and big balls of hay and tumbleweed!!
